Your Old House: Utilizing Local Resources to Uncover History Close to Home

In an area with a story as rich as Coastal Georgia’s, many of us live in homes tied to different parts of our history and the people who made it happen. Once you’ve moved in, how can you find out more about your house’s previous inhabitants—and the history of the structure itself?

Join Historian Allison Dupuis of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society to learn more about utilizing resources at CGHS, at the Marshes of Glynn Libraries, and online. At the downtown Brunswick library, participants will meet for a presentation on CGHS’s helpful resources for personal research, information on making a research appointment, and questions and answers about the Society’s archives and collections. Next, the group will move to the library’s Heritage Room for an exploration of collections available in person and online, including Brunswick City Directories, Sanborn maps, and the library’s property records collection. The program will end in the meeting room with a further search of online resources like Georgia Historic Newspapers, Find a Grave, and FamilySearch. Participants will receive a take-home sheet (and, if they wish, a virtual version of this sheet) with a list of helpful sources and use instructions for each.

This program meets at the Brunswick Library’s Conference Room B. The presentation begins at 5:30 p.m., and the program will last one hour in total. The program is free—please sign up in advance through the link below. Registration is limited to thirty participants.
