Lab Volunteering

Each year, our archaeology lab takes on a range of projects, made possible by the passionate commitment of volunteers. Many of our current and past volunteers come from diverse professional backgrounds, bringing a wealth of new experiences and perspectives to the lab.

Experiential Learning

Depending on the project, volunteers can engage different facets of archaeology, such as:

  • Artifact Processing
  • Educational Outreach
  • Conservation
  • Excavation
  • Documentation
  • Research

All volunteers begin by gaining hands-on experience in the lab. After an initial training period, they can explore additional roles based on their interests and skills. While archaeological fieldwork is a sought-after activity, opportunities to participate are limited, and schedules can be unpredictable.

When Can I Volunteer?

Volunteer activities typically take place Monday through Friday, usually in the mornings. Due to the amount of time required for training, we generally ask that lab volunteers commit to participating at least one morning every two weeks.

Interested in Becoming a Volunteer?

We are incredibly fortunate to have dedicated volunteers whose hard work illuminates coastal Georgia’s rich history. If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer, contact Dr. Aaron Ellrich. (Please note: volunteer opportunities are limited due to space and scheduling constraints).
